Registered Nurse Certifications: ACLS, BLS, NIH Must-Have: ACLS,
BLS, NIH Description: The Progressive Care Unit cares for patients
with moderate physiologic instability requiring support. Examples
of patient conditions include COPD exacerbation, pneumonia, CHF,
and trach patients. Patients in this unit are hemodynamically
stable and require cardiac and respiratory monitoring and
management every 2-4 hours. The level of care on this unit is more
intensive than that provided in standard Medical/Surgical Units but
less than that of the ICU. This unit specializes in the care of
cardiac and pulmonary patients. Nursing interventions must be
performed at a frequency of every 3-4 hours. Vital signs must be
monitored every 4 hours. Continuous cardiac monitoring is required.
Blood glucose monitoring should occur every 4 hours. Neurological
monitoring is needed at any frequency as determined by assessment.
The unit utilizes various types of equipment including Alaris
pumps, Kangaroo pumps, and monitoring systems. Computers are
available in every room for documentation purposes. The
documentation system in use is Meditech. The unit operates with a
staffing ratio of 1 nurse to 4-5 patients. There are two Patient
Care Techs and one Unit Secretary available on the unit.
Self-scheduling includes three weekend shifts per four-week
schedule. There are no on-call requirements. Floating policies
prioritize travelers, then PRN staff, then regular staff. Patient
experience focuses on courtesy, respect, and teamwork in patient
care. Advanced skills in telemetry care are essential. The unit
provides oxygen therapy using various modalities including nasal
cannula, BIPAP/CPAP, and AirVo. Unit guidelines and policies must
be adhered to, which include specific standards of care and nurse
